6-Day Rongai Route
The Rongai Route approaches Mount Kilimanjaro from the north, offering a unique perspective and a quieter trekking experience. Known for its drier conditions and stunning views of the Kenyan plains, this route provides a gradual ascent through diverse ecosystems, from farmlands to alpine deserts. The Rongai Route is an excellent choice for those who prefer solitude and a higher chance of clear weather during the climb. This scenic journey concludes with breathtaking views at the summit of Africa’s tallest mountain.
Day 1: Arrival in Moshi or Arusha
Upon arrival, your guide will welcome you and transfer you to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha. Attend a pre-climb briefing and gear check, then relax in preparation for your adventure.
Day 2: Moshi/Arusha to Nalemoru Gate to Simba Camp (2,650m)
Drive to Nalemoru Gate on the northern side of the mountain. After registration, begin your trek through farmland and pine forests. The trail gradually ascends, and you’ll reach Simba Camp in the late afternoon, where you’ll enjoy dinner and rest.
Day 3: Simba Camp to Second Cave Camp (3,450m)
The trail ascends gently through open heathland, offering stunning views of Kibo and the Kenyan plains. Arrive at Second Cave Camp in the afternoon for acclimatization and relaxation.
Day 4: Second Cave Camp to Kikelewa Camp (3,600m)
Continue trekking through the moorlands, with increasingly dramatic views of Mawenzi Peak. Arrive at Kikelewa Camp, nestled near a beautiful valley, and enjoy the serenity of your surroundings.
Day 5: Kikelewa Camp to Mawenzi Tarn Camp (4,330m)
Climb steeply up to Mawenzi Tarn, located beneath the rugged peaks of Mawenzi. Spend the afternoon acclimatizing and exploring the area.
Day 6: Mawenzi Tarn Camp to Kibo Hut (4,700m)
Trek across the Saddle, a vast alpine desert between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. Reach Kibo Hut, where you’ll prepare for the summit push and rest early.
Day 7: Summit Day – Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), Descend to Horombo Hut
Start your climb at midnight, reaching Gilman’s Point on the crater rim by sunrise. Continue to Uhuru Peak for breathtaking views and a sense of accomplishment. Descend back to Horombo Hut for a well-deserved rest.
Day 8: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate, Return to Moshi/Arusha
Descend through the heath and rainforest zones to Marangu Gate, where you’ll receive your summit certificate. Transfer back to Moshi or Arusha for a celebratory evening at your hotel.
