6-Day Machame Route

The Machame Route offers a challenging yet rewarding adventure, showcasing Kilimanjaro’s diverse ecosystems and breathtaking views. This scenic trail is ideal for trekkers seeking both beauty and an excellent acclimatization profile.

Day 1: Arrival in Moshi
Your adventure begins in Moshi, where you’ll be warmly welcomed by your guide and briefed about the upcoming trek. After a gear check and preparation, settle into your hotel and enjoy views of Kilimanjaro looming in the distance. Rest well as excitement builds for the climb ahead.

Day 2: Moshi to Machame Camp (2,835m)
After breakfast, drive to Machame Gate (1,800m) where the trek officially begins. Walk through lush montane rainforest, surrounded by towering trees, colorful birds, and playful monkeys. The trail gradually ascends to Machame Camp, nestled at the edge of the forest and offering your first night under the stars.

Day 3: Machame Camp to Shira Camp (3,750m)
Leave the forest behind as the trail climbs into the heather and moorland zone. Along the way, enjoy stunning views of the Shira Plateau and Mount Meru in the distance. Arrive at Shira Camp in the afternoon, with ample time to rest, explore the rocky terrain, and acclimatize to the higher altitude.

Day 4: Shira Camp to Barranco Camp (3,960m)
Today’s trek is both challenging and rewarding as you ascend to Lava Tower (4,600m) for acclimatization before descending to Barranco Camp. The changing landscapes, from alpine desert to the lush Barranco Valley, offer breathtaking views. The iconic Barranco Wall looms nearby, providing a preview of tomorrow’s climb.

Day 5: Barranco Camp to Barafu Camp (4,673m)
Begin the day by scaling the Barranco Wall, a thrilling climb offering panoramic vistas. Traverse through the Karanga Valley and gradually ascend to Barafu Camp. The alpine desert surroundings are stark yet captivating. Rest early and prepare for the final summit push, which begins at midnight.

Day 6: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) to Mweka Camp (3,100m)
Embark on your summit attempt under a starlit sky. The climb to Uhuru Peak is steep and demanding but immensely rewarding. Reach the summit at sunrise, standing on Africa’s highest point, with views stretching to the horizon. After celebrating your achievement, descend to Barafu Camp for a short rest before continuing to Mweka Camp.

Day 7: Mweka Camp to Moshi
Descend through lush forests to Mweka Gate, where you’ll receive a well-deserved certificate for completing the climb. Return to Moshi and celebrate your success with your guide and team, reflecting on the incredible journey you’ve accomplished.
